Dear Junk Beautiful,
Though I live on the other side of the globe where Europe is my playground, I find you & I are two peas in a pod. I live for flea marketing, going to the brocante in hopes of finding that picture perfect treasure! Just recently on my blog The Antiques Diva, I posted a list of some of the flea markets going on in Europe this summer and I thought that any of your readers traveling to Europe this summer might enjoy the list. Click on the link below and scroll down past the "Diva Style Blog".

Cheers!

If you ever find yourself traveling along Interstate 75 on a weekend, about half way between Knoxville and Chattanooga, a great place to stop and shop - or at least stretch your legs - is the Sweetwater Flea Market. More than 500 vendors sell their wares here on Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. till 5 p.m., rain or shine. With over 150,000 square feet under one roof, it is the largest indoor flea market in the state of Tennessee. There are also outside booths. A small number of vendors, mostly in adjacent buildings, are open for business daily.

You can find just about everything here, from cookware to pets to rare coins. Prices can be very good. For example, I saw a travel pillow at Sweetwater Flea Market for $2.00, when the exact same item sells in a travel store in a fancy Mall for $11.95. Still, don't presume everything you buy here will be a bargain. No matter where - always shop with care.

    Eastern Market

by Jon on October 31st, 2006

Washington DC - Eastern Market - FlowersLocated in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington DC is a historic and interesting jewel for shopping and spending a weekend afternoon - Eastern Market.

It’s a combination flea market, artist’s gallery, farmer’s market, antique bazaar, flowers shop, bakery and butcher shop spread over a couple blocks.  Think of it as a big and somewhat whacky “town center meets mega garage sale”.

The market is actually comprised of a building with two large halls (north & south) which services as a food market and community center and its grounds plus a large parking lot across the street which houses the weekend open air flea market.

The market building, completed just 8 years after the end of the Civil War, is situated on a tree lined street in the historic Capital Hill neighborhood.  It’s the last fresh food and farmers market that is still in operation in the District.  The building has been designated as a National Historical Landmark.Washington DC - Eastern Market - Jewelery

As part of Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s initial plan for the new Capital City, he wanted to ensure the public had reliable access to fresh food and produce.   The first such market which opening in 1802 was located where the Capitol Building now sits.

It was moved in 1812 to East Capitol St. and after the British burned down the Capitol in 1814, the Supreme Court, which had previously held court in the Capital Building, moved their next term to the to the East Capitol Street market.

Today, it acts as an unofficial town center for “The Hill”, and bustles with activity as it has since it first opened in 1873.

There are many nearby restaurants ranging from casual to more elegant that serve weekend brunch and lunch so you can make an afternoon out of your visit.

Some local trivia: The site was used last month for a location shoot for the production of the next in the Die Hard movie series staring Bruce Willis.

              What to do
                               in a loveless marriage

    From Dear Abby:

“Wilbur” and I have been together for 25 years, married for nine. During that time we have been through almost everything.
Abby, I am disappointed in the man Wilbur has turned out to be. He does nothing around the house. He does hold a job, but that’s the beginning and the end of it. On top of that, Wilbur shows me no affection. He doesn’t hug or kiss me, and he sleeps with a pillow between us. I realize he was never very lovey-dovey, but now there is no affection at all.
I dream about being close to a man, having a companion with whom to enjoy things in life — simple things like going for coffee together after walking through a flea market holding hands.

Our lives have been intertwined for a quarter of a century. I feel there’s nowhere for me to go. How does someone in my situation find happiness?

What You Should: As for the flea market and holding hands, if you waited 16 years to marry this guy, clearly, you’re a patient woman. Alzheimer’s can’t be too far away for Wilbur. Maybe then your dreams can be realized.
